Frequently Asked Questions Q. I am interested in a career as a Court Reporter. Are there any courses I can take or how do I get into this profession?
A. There are three main areas of court reporting in Ontario.
Ministry of the Attorney General - working in the Ontario and the Superior Courts of Justice
Regional Municipality - Working in the courts dealing with Provincial Offences
Independent Court Reporting Agencies – working privately doing examinations for discovery, depositions, et cetera.
All of the above require candidates to pass certain entrance level requirements such as typing wpm, grammar, spelling and punctuation, and a basic understanding of the law. Then they have an extensive in-house training and orientation curriculum to prepare you for the position.
For a career with your local municipality, check their website for career opportunities. Key words are “court reporter” or “Prosecuting Provincial Offences”.
If you’re interested in a career with an independent firm, become a member of the CRAO and get connected to the world of court reporting.
Both Durham College and Centennial College offer a course in Court Support Services. We don't know what their tuition fees are nor can we comment on the curriculum one way or the other. Please do your own research to see if either of those might work for you.
